With February being National Children’s Dental Health Month, we here at Dental Center of Mesa wanted to dedicate all posts this month to children’s’ oral care – starting with out top tips to creating healthy and habits, and a healthy smile, for your kiddos. Whether you’re a new parent, or just looking for a refresher, we’ve got you covered with these tips:
See the dentist by your child’s first birthday
Around the time the child is turning one, it’s time to start building healthy habits and start seeing the dentist. Getting your child accustomed to seeing their dentist at such an early age will help in sure that your child never developed a fear towards the dentist, and builds not only trust, but familiarity for their dental care provider too.
Teach your child healthy brushing habits early
Although their mouths won’t be full of teeth yet, it’s still important to teach your child healthy brushing habits from the get-go. Before your child is three, brushing with warm water and a soft bristled toothbrush is all that’s needed. When your child becomes old enough to know not to swallow toothpaste, then would be a good time to start introducing fluoride toothpaste for your child to brush with.
Avoid cavities from the start
Yes, even small children with low sugar intake can be prone to getting cavities. If you see discoloration or minor pitting, your child could be developing cavities. To avoid this problem, avoid sending your child to bed with a bottle of milk or juice.
